On the restart with four laps to go Michael Andretti (Mario's son - black and white car) was leading with Marco Andretti (Michael's son - red, white and blue car) in second. Sam Hornish Jr., who is from Defiance, was in sixth in the red and white car.
Hornish passed two guys right away to climb to third, and Marco passed his dad to take the lead. Then Hornish passed Michael to move into second.
With one lap to go, Hornish tried to make a move inside Marco. But Marco pinched down on him and Hornish had to back waaay out of the throttle and lost a ton of momentum. Everybody in the media center thought Marco had the race locked up at that point.
But on the next to last turn, you can see Marco turn in a full car width sooner than Hornish. This forced him to back out of the throttle so as not to drift up into the wall. Hornish got a great run on him and was able to draft by him on the final straight for the win, becoming the first driver in 90 runnings of the Indy 500 to make the race-winning pass after the final turn.
The thing that was so crazy is that everyone was so busy watching Michael and Marco battle that no one noticed Hornish slipping up into the mix. Michael has the distinction of being the driver who has led the most laps at Indy without winning (think Phil Mickelson), and Marco was a rookie.
It was supposed to be a great story: father continuing his frustration while son wins on first try. Instead it was more Andretti luck at Indy as local hero Hornish stole the win from both of them.
By the way, here is a picture I found on the web of Hornish in Victory Lane while Tim from the Defiance paper and I interview Hornish's mom and wife in the background.
Wow, that check is alot smaller than I would have guessed a race winner would take home. At least when Phil Mickelson comes in second he still pulls in 200-300k.
I'm guessing they make most of their money via sponsors?
That is just one of many checks he received. There are several contingency sponsor awards. TagHeuer (the one pictured) gives $10K to the winner every year. Sam's total prize money for winning that one race was $1,744,855. That last turn pas cost Andretti $1,056,350. (He got $688,505 for finishing second.)
Most of that $1.7 million is prize money from the track. I can't find the exact number, but it was was in the $1.5-1.6 million range plus the contingency money.

(The guy in sunglasses and a red shirt that they keep showing in the pits is Mario Andretti.)

Wowza! That's first place for most PGA 3 times over! I stand corrected.
On a side note, who wants to collect 1.4 mill in $10,000 increments?
That'd be me.
